College of Food Technology, Thumburmuzhy

Food is the ultimate reason for the very existence of human beings. The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution to world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high growth and huge profit sector due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing industry.
With emerging new companies in the food industry with their innovative products, it is going to throw immense potential for the graduates of food related courses.

 

College of Food Technology
The College of Food Technology, Thumburmuzhy, 15 kms from Chalakkudy town, Thrissur was started at 7 September 2015 under the Faculty of Dairy Science and Technology as a constituent college under Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University offering four year degree programme in B Tech Food Technology.

Mode of Selection
The candidates admitted to this course are selected through the Common Engineering Entrance Examination (KEAM) conducted by the Govt of Kerala. The candidates should have completed plus two or its equivalent examination with Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics as optional subjects and should have secured an aggregate of 50% marks or above in these subjects in the qualifying examination. The candidates can choose their option for this course among other graduate courses in engineering. The number of seats per batch is limited to 20.

Syllabus Followed
The course curriculum for B Tech (Food Technology) is so designed to make students competent in the food industry. The four year degree programme follows the syllabus approved by the IVth Deans Committee recommendations of the ICAR. The course is offered for duration of four years comprising of eight semesters of which the last semester is set apart for experiential learning.  The total credits have been apportioned to Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology and Food Business Management with due weightage for each.

Work Experience Programme
The students pursuing B Tech (Food Technology) have to undergo two work experience courses- Hands on training-cum-Experiential learning in the experiential food processing plant and In plant training at a large scale commercial Food processing plant for 100 days during their final year as a part of the requirement for the degree programme.

 

 

Study Tour
The students will have to undergo one study tour viz, All India study tour of 30 days duration , organized to facilitate the students to visit the most important dairy and food plants and other institutions across the country. Apart from these, study tours are also organized as a part of various courses during the course of study.

Student Activities
The students are actively involved in various co-curricular activities like Arts and Sports, Student’s Union activities, National Service Schemes, exhibitions, conferences, seminars, debates etc paving way for improving the innate skills of the students.

Enthralled within the beauty of Athirapally walls and Thumburmuzhy hanging garden, the college is showered with the purest of air and scenic beauty. The life within the classrooms moves on with regular lectures, assignments, seminars, periodic examinations and so on. Apart from the academic schedules, students are given an arena for improving their communication, leadership, social and managerial skills through various extracurricular activities. 

Students also participates in exciting Co-curricular activities like Annual Arts’ Festival and College Sports Meet, Student’s Union activities, Exhibitions, Conferences, Seminars, Technical Meets, Debates, Quiz competitions, etc. regularly organized aiming at the holistic development of student community.

With the rising demand for processed foods and increased export of food and food products, Food Technology as a career option is becoming more and more popular. The students are exposed to various career opportunities in both public and private sectors in the post of Supervisors, Assistant Manager, Production Managers, Food Packaging Manager, R & D Personnel, Food Scientists, Food Development Manager, Quality Control Officer, Sensory Scientist, Food Safety Auditors, and Food stylists, Marketing / Sales Personnel in Food Processing Industry etc
