Department Profile:

The Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (KVASU) has established a “Centre for Animal Adaptation to Environment and Climate Change Studies (CAADECCS)” to excel in climate change education, research and extension in the field of Animal Agricultural under the Directorate of Academics and Research as per the University Proceedings No. KVASU/DAR/R2/3579/2011 (1) Pookode dated 27.04.2012 with ICAR special grant during X1 Plan.

The CAADECCS is serving as the nodal agency dealing with research and capacity building on all the aspects of climate risk management in relation to animal agriculture and provide information to the planners/ policy makers for implementing strategies to mitigate the ill effects of climate change/variability so as to sustain and enhance the rural livelihoods through livestock production and management. CAADECCS has already signed MoU with UWA and NIANP and with other national and international institutions are in the process.

The centre is offering PhD and post graduate diploma in ‘Climate Change and Animal Agriculture’ with a view providing professionals to the society for handling climatic risks which may become more frequent in the projected climatic conditions. The DST-SERB training programme on ”Fundamentals of Livestock Meteorology” was organized at CAADECCS from 2-12-2013 to 22-12-2013. Awareness programmes both for professionals and farmers were organized at different parts of the state. CAADECCS is actively involving in the workshops and seminars conducted by IMD, Department of Environment and State Disaster Management Authority.

Extension and technology transfer :

• DST-SERB training programme on ”Fundamentals of Livestock Meteorology” for 21 days was organized at Centre for Animal Adaptation to Environment and Climate Change Studies(CAADECCS) from 2-12-2013 to 22-12-2013 for scientists from various universities all over the country
• A surface observatory was developed near the CAADECCS campus with the instruments supplied by India Meteorological Department (IMD) and also with the technical expertise of IMD.

Services offered :

• Provide weather data for various research purposes of different departments of KVASU
• Provide training on weather based animal husbandry practices to professionals and farmers
• Provide livestock advisory based on weather forewarning to farmers in collaboration with KAU and also through mass media
