Base Farm, Kolahalamedu
About:
Base Farm, Kolahalamedu is one of the major stations of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. It is located at Kolahalamedu (9o 39’ 10” N, 76o 55’ 41” E) near Wagamon, in Idukki district at an altitude of +1100 m MSL. This farm spreads across an area of 100 acres, surrounded by undulating grass lands and tea gardens. The climate is cool and pleasant (8-20℃ ) and most suitable for dairy farming.
Origin & History
The farm was established as an extension unit of Indo-Swiss Project, Madupatty during the year 1963, as a supporting bull farm. Later the farm was brought under the control of Kerala Livestock Development Board. During the year 2000, the farm was handed over to Kerala Agricultural University for starting a college of Dairy Science and Technology. Later on during the year 2011, the farm was transferred to when Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, when it was established bifurcating Kerala Agricultural University.
Mandate
- Conduct training programs for Farm Assistants, self-help groups, women and farmers
- Produce hygienic quality milk from high bred cattle
- Produce quality fodder and planting materials
- Provide research facilities in dairy cattle production for students and faculties
- Bio-energy conservation and Bio-waste management with value addition of bio-waste
- To act as a family farming and self-learning cum home stay center for inculcating the interest in livestock and poultry farming in general public
- Conservation and improvement of native livestock and poultry breeds adaptable to the region
- Cater technical and resource input for sustainable organic farming and water conservation system
- To act as a regional center for the transfer of technology to farmers.
