28A three day long First National Workshop on Comprehensive management on Working Dogs is being held at Kerala police Academy(KEPA) in collaboration with Kerala Veterinary Animal Sciences University from, 28.10.2019. Dr B Sandhya, ADGP and Director Training was inaugurating the workshop and stressed the need of validation of the science in the role of working dogs in performing the duties in the law enforcing departments of India.For detection of big stocks of explosive/narcotic no advanced euipment serve the purpose and only the dogs are depended largely for it,hence they are considered as "living scanner".Taking stock on this she emphasised the need of preserving welfare and comfort of the working dogs, who are serving in police force since 1956, to do the duty for the national secuity.Scientific validation of science involving their ability to contribute also need to be researched.
The work shop is attended by officers across india from Jammu & Kashmir to Kerala,Kerala Forest Department,Animal Husbandry and Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. The workshop will focus on sessions viz. Canine behavior, ethology and aggression, Kennel management and grooming of dogs, Dog Nutrition, Prevention and control of diseases of working dogs, Basics of reproduction and common reproductive problems among dogs, Genetic diseases in dogs, First aid and wound management, Human Animal Interaction, Narcotic /Explosive detection etc and it an opportunity for participants to acquire advanced knowlegde to implement in their own management practices on regular basis. The workshop is planned to come with Standard Operating Procedures applicable to all working dogs in India which will be milestone for the work of these dumb companion.
