02'Amrutham' seven day NSS special camp was organized at Thumboormuzhy from February 18 to 24, 2017, under the combined efforts of NSS unit of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, College of Food Technology, Thumboormuzhy, Cattle Breeding Station, Thumboormuzhy and Pariyaram Grama Panchayath. The main success of the camp was in the cleaning of 'Baalikulam', a vast water body of 1.5 acres which is the main drinking water source of Pariyaram Grama Panchayath. The cleaning programme was inaugurated by Sri. Jinesh P Jose (President, Pariyaram Grama Panchayat) and was monitored by Sri. B. D. Devassy (MLA, Chalakkudy). The NSS volunteers were actively engaged in the construction of a model farm unit and setting up of vegetable garden for 5 idenitified beneficiaries.
Hands on training to about 20 farmers each were provided on the production of various innovative Jackfruit products under the leadership of Smt. Indira Lawrence (Kudumbasree unit, Kodakara) and dairy products preparation led by Dr. Ayesha and Dr. Athira (Assistant Professors, CFT, Thumboormuzhy). 'Animal Health Care Camps' were organized in three different centres under leadership of Dr.Vinod Kumar, Dr. K. Shyamala, Dr. Ambili. V. R and Veterinarians of Chalakudy Veterinaria’s club.
An interactive session with farmers led by eminent Veterinary Professionals viz., Dr. Aravind Ghosh, Dr. M. R. Saseendranath, Dr. P.V. Treesamol, Dr. Anil. K. S, Dr. A. Prasad. Dr. Justin Davis and Dr. Joy George was enthusiastically attended by over 45 farmers. Each farmer was provided with 2 kg K.S. feed and 1 kg mineral mixture free of the cost. An exhibition on ' Know Zoonoses to No Zoonoses' set up as part of the camp grabbed huge public attention. A mesmerizing wildlife photography exhibition of the State level Award Winner, Sri. Shaji Mathilakam, filled the campers with awe and curiosity about wildlife.
Various interactive sessions such as ‘Voice of Sony’ by Smt. Sony (NSS award winner and NSS Programme officer of Govt. College, Kuttanelloor), ‘Sharing of Life Experiences’ by Dr. Rajan Chungath (former Joint Director, Animal Husbandry Department) along the shores of Chalakudy river, class on ‘Lifestyle Diseases’ by Dr. K. G. Radhakrishnan (Professor, Dept of Anaesthesia, Govt. Medical College, Thrissur), class on 'NSS and students' by Dr. Ani. S.Das (Assistant Professor, CVAS, Mannuthy), class on ‘Know Zoonoses to No Zoonoses’ by Dr. C. Sethulekshmi (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Veterinary Public Health, CVAS, Mannuthy), talk by Chalakudy DySP Shahul Hameed about ‘Rising concern on Drugs and Drug abuse’, a talk on Kerala's flora and fauna by Keerthi, IFS, Chalakudy DFO were organized as a part of the seven day camp. School students from neibouring schools had attended the exhibition, seminar, quiz and posture competition on zoonoses.
The valedictory function was graced by ‘Guruvandanam’ and ‘Mathruvandanam’ function, offering respect to Gurus; Dr. Padmanabha Iyer and Dr.C.B.Manomohan (Retd. Professors, CVAS Mannuthy) and five lady octogenarians of the Pariyaram Grama Panchayath.
