05Amul, which is currently handling only buffalo and cow milk plan to collect , process and market camel milk from August 15th (2013).Camel milk will be handled by Sarhad Dairy ( Kutch District cooperative Milk producers union). Marketing will be taken up by Amul.
Kutch region has nearly 12,000 camels and half of them are milch animals. Nearly 3000 lactating camels will yield 5-6 litres of milk per animal. Since camels are migratory, collecting milk is difficult. But an NGO, Sahjeevan has volunteered to do it. They will deliver the milk at the village level societies. Sarhad Dairy plans to collect and process 1000-1500 litres initially.Gradually depending upon the demand it can produce 18000 litres of milk per day. At present camel milk is priced Rs12-15 a litre. But it is expected to increase Rs. 40 after processing.
