04The extension training program for the final year BTech (Dairy Science and Technology)students of 2007 batch of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was held at Wayanad from 9th -17th July 2011. It was organized by the Dairy Development Department of Wayanad district. The training programme was inaugurated at Theneri Milk Co-operative Society, Wayanad by Sri. P.T.Gopalakurup, Chairman, KCMMF (Milma) on July 9th. Sri. M. Prakash, Assistant Director (Quality Control), Department of Dairy Development was the training coordinator.Sri. Muralidharan Pillai (Assistant Director, Ernakulam) presided over the function and Dr. Senthil Kumar (Asst. Professor, COVAS, Pookode) and Sri. Binish (Ward member, Theneri) offered felicitations.
Wayanad district stands second in milk production in Kerala and produces maximum milk from small area. Hence conducting a training programme at Wayanad is truly ideal for students. During training, students were able to interact with farmers through surveys, seminars and interactive sessions. They were able to understand the crisis and current situation of dairy farmers. The advice given by the students resulted in better feedback from the farmers. Training programme helped students to understand the livelihood situation, traditions and aspirations of dairy farmers.
The programme also included visit to Wayand milk, many dairy co-operatives, Wayanad Dairy (MILMA), Maananthavadi Dairy Extension Service Unit, proposed Brahmagiri Meat Processing Plant, Pookode Veterinary College and wild forest in Muthanga. Radio talk conducted by ‘MATTOLI’ was yet another experience for the students. Information regarding the innovations such as LYPSAA software used in Dairy Co-operatives developed by National Informatics centre (NIC) was very useful. As part of training programme, cattle show was organized at Meenangadi Milk Society along with a free medical camp. The Training Programme created new thoughts and helped to students to learn innovative ideas. It helped in understanding ground reality of dairy farming in Kerala.
