Centre for One Health Education Advocacy Research & Training, Pookode
The Centre for One Health Education, Advocacy, Research and Training (COHEART) was established as an autonomous centre of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) at Pookode in February 2014 based on the decisions of the 10th Academic Council and 26th Board of Management. The Centre has emerged as a need for Institutional responsibility and global networking by bringing together various health and allied health professionals.COHEART aims at shifting the development paradigm from “reactive” to a “proactive” approach where man, animal, and nature can complement each other. The Center enables to strengthen and Implement One Health problem solving projects that engage experts to develop viable plans of action for solving specific health problems.
VISION OF COHEART
- Establishment of suitable facility for academic, research and training on One Health and developing liaison to facilitate One Health concept and its practice
- Empowering the human resources to face the challenging needs of Health sector with special reference to zoonoses control
- Develop One Health competency among various stake holders and graduates through dedicated courses and training
- Develop, implement and sustain strategies for One Health practices by 'thinking globally while acting locally'.
MISSION OF COHEART
- Improve the lives of all species-human and animal-through the integration of human medicine, veterinary medicine and environmental science
- Face new global challenges by creating synergies through cross-sectoral collaborations
- Advocate One Health concept at policy level
ACTIVITIES OF COHEART
· EDUCATION: To offer 3 courses- PG Diploma in One Health, PG Certificate courses in One Health Surveillance and PG Certificate in Community Based Disaster Management. All the courses are suitable for health related professionals interested in integrating the knowledge and application of human medicine, veterinary medicine and public health. The exploration of interconnectedness helps us to realise various factors and conditions of healthy existence.
· ADVOCACY: In view of the increasing importance of the optimal health of Man, Animal and Nature (M. A. N.) in the development of the community locally, regionally and globallythe centre advocates One Health in all the activities. For example, launching of Dr. Coheart’s YouTube channel where a virtual 2D character educates general public, farmers and professional on emerging public health issues.
· RESEARCH: COHEART conducts research to disseminate knowledge in the area of public health in order to improve health outcomes of human and animal populations and their surrounding environment.
· TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING: As a part of capacity building activities, the Centre conducts series of awareness programmes, camps, interface meets, important day commemorations, seminars, workshop, student event etc.
