Surgical repair of Traumatic diaphragmatic hernia in a 3 month old kitten, weighing just 900 g, was successfully performed under inhalation anaesthesia and artificial ventilation, in the Dept. of Veterinary Surgery, Pookode. Significance of this case is the extremely small size of the kitten. The extremely small size, poses great hurdle in anaesthesia and ventilation, and hence surgery is utmost risky in such patients. The anaesthetic and ventilation facilities established in the Dept. of Veterinary Surgery, under the Experiential Learning scheme of ICAR - “Critical Care Unit”, made this surgery possible in this small kitten. Anaesthesia and artificial ventilation was performed using a Magill’s breathing circuit with an indigenous modification to suit the extreme small size of the patient.
