India is the largest producer of milk in the world. Milk production in the country is increasing @ 4% per annum contributing more than Rs. 1,00,000 crores to GDP. There are 678 milk processing plant in the country requiring large human resource pool to run these dairies. With the introduction of modern technology in the production and processing of dairy products, the concept of milk is shifting towards value added dairy business. The Dairy and Food industries have opened up new avenues for employment and economy. It is estimated that Dairy industry is generating new jobs to the extent of 1.0 lakhs every year. Dairy sector is further expected to grow faster and generate more employment in the near future. Adoption of the latest & advanced technology in milk processing can provide better quality, nutrition and more employment opportunities.
Dairy and Food Technology offers a promising option for value addition and resource mobilisation in terms of availability of Food for the consumers and simultaneously providing more earnings at farmers and industry level. There is large scope for Dairy and Food industry to grow in view of the globalization and increasing purchasing power of consumers. This will further increase the requirement of Dairy Technologists and researchers.

College of Dairy Science & Technology was established in the year 1993 as a constituent college under Kerala Agricultural University for offering Four year Degree programme in B.Tech (Dairy Science & Technology).
Mode of selection
The candidates admitted for this course are selected through the Common Entrance Examination conducted by the Govt. of Kerala. The candidates should have completed plus two or its equivalent examination with Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics as optional subjects and should have secured an aggregate of 50% marks or above in these subjects in the qualifying examination. The candidates can choose their option for this course among other graduate courses in Engineering.
The course curricula for B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) is prepared as a unique job oriented degree programme which leads to a total development of graduates and make them capable to face various situations in varied field of work. Students are also enriched with entrepreneurial qualities to start their own industry. Additionally, the graduates get acquainted with various facets of professionally managed industries which include production management, raw material purchases, personnel management, sales and marketing by virtue of industrial inplant training. This helps students to acquire confidence to work as highly professional human resource for Dairy and Food industry.
Syllabus approved by the IVth Deans committee recommendations of the ICAR is followed for the Degree programme. The course is offered for duration of eight semesters of which the last semester is set apart for inplant training. The total credits have been apportioned to Dairy Engineering, Dairy Technology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Business Management and Dairy Husbandry with due weightage for each.
The Library houses an excellent collection of scientific books, journals, research papers, publications, annual reports, and bound volumes of periodicals which makes the library a learner’s paradise. The library facilities are available to all students, trainees, faculty members and non-teaching staff.
Study tours are an integral part of the academic curriculum. A ten days south India tour and 23 days all India tour is organized to facilitate the students to visit the most important Dairy and Food plants and other institutions across the county. Apart from these, study tours are also organized as part of the various courses during the course of study. The short tours are conducted as per the contemporary requirements of the different courses. It includes trips to dairies, packaging industries and other such institutes concerned. The South India tour covers the four states of South India. Cities such as Bangalore, Mysore, Madras and Hyderabad where industry and history lie in harmony with each other are given importance.
The All India tour is an ambitious programme covering almost the whole of North India. The Aarey Milk Colony, Cadburys and Parle biscuit factory in Mumbai, NDDB, IRMA and AMUL in Anand, Delhi Milk Scheme and Mother Dairy in Delhi, NESTLE and GSK at Sonepat, NDRI at Karnal are some of the prominent insti-tutions which are visited during the All India Tour.
All the students are required to undergo hands-on training in the experimental dairy plant during the VIIth semester and undergo work experience training during the VIIIth semester. The work experience programme is organized in the dairy farms for a period of 35 days and in commercial dairy plants for a period of 70 days. These work experience prgrammes are intended to gain practical experience in the management of organized dairy farms and also in the operation, maintenance and management of a large Commercial Dairy plant. Students are offered training in the big commercial dairy plants such as AMUL, DYNAMIX, Mother Dairy etc for the in- plant training.
Diverse and vibrant student activities are an integral part of education. These provide stimulating avenues to help the students shape meaningful goals outside their studies. Co-curricular activities like arts and sports, student’s union activities, National Service Scheme, exhibitions, conferences, seminars, debates, etc. are organized to improve innate skills of students.
Campus recruitment programs are conducted for B.Tech (Dairy Science and Technology) graduates every year. The institutions such as Almarai in UAE, Dynamix in Pune, MILMA, are regularly visiting the campus to recruit the students for various positions. The students passing out from here are absorbed as Dairy Extension Officers in the Department of Dairy Development in Govt. of Kerala. Many students are also able to go for Management studies and have successfully been placed as executives in many private and public sector institutions. The institutions include AMUL, NDDB, DFRL, SUMUL, Mother Dairy, GSK, Smith line Beecham, Cadburys, and Banking institutions such as SBI, ICICI, HDFC, IOB, PNB etc.
