Area of Research

Areas of research interest

1. Ruminant nutrition, complete feeds/ TMR

2. Formulation of a cost effective complete feed for lactating dairy cows using conventional and un-conventional feed ingredients.

3. Evaluation of the nutritional potential of ayurvedic medicinal residues for ruminants

4. Formulation of a cost effective milk replacer for calves using soya milk

5. Formulation of a low cost broiler poultry feed using spent brewer’s grains (SBG) as a replacement for the costly ingredient, soyabean meal

Areas of expertise

1) Conducted research for the first time in Kerala on goats fed on complete feeds with varying levels of crude fibre and found out that Malabari goat kids can be reared in confinement, exclusively on complete feeds with economic benefits – research conducted under the guidance of Eminent Nutritionist and Former Professor and Head of Dept. of Animal Nutrition, Dr. George Mathen at the Goat and Sheep Farm of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy in the year 1997-98, as part of M. V. Sc. Programme of KAU.

2) Conducted research for the first time in India on lactating dairy cows by feeding them on complete feeds with varying levels of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and found that dairy cows fed on paddy straw based complete feeds with minimum level of NDF (25 to 35 per cent) gave better results in terms of milk yield, fat percentage, earlier post-partum heat etc. than those fed on the conventional grass –concentrate system, with no adverse effects. The study proved that lactating cows can be reared economically and exclusively on complete feeds with minimum amount of fibre, which augurs well for the feed and fodder shortage of Kerala. The research was conducted under the guidance of Dr. K. M. Syam Mohan, Associate Professor and Finance Officer of The University at the University Livestock Farm Mannuthy in the years 2013-2015 as part of Ph.D. programme of KVASU.
