OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1) Dr. Biju Chacko conducted research for the first time in Kerala on goats fed on complete feeds with varying levels of crude fibre and found out that Malabari goat kids can be reared in confinement, exclusively on complete feeds with economic benefits in the year 1997-98, as part of his M. V. Sc. Programme in KAU.
2) Dr. Biju Chacko conducted research for the first time in India, during the period 2013-2015 as part of Ph.D. programme of KVASU, on lactating dairy cows by feeding them on complete feeds with varying levels of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and found that dairy cows fed on paddy straw based complete feeds with minimum level of NDF (25 to 35 per cent) gave better results in terms of milk yield, fat percentage, earlier post-partum heat etc. than those fed on the conventional grass –concentrate system, with no adverse effects. The study proved that lactating cows can be reared economically and exclusively on complete feeds with minimum amount of fibre, which augurs well for the feed and fodder shortage of Kerala.
3) Under the guidance of Dr. Biju Chacko, paddy straw based complete feeds for lactating dairy cows, with the optimum level of NDF viz., 35 per cent, containing the unconventional energy rich feed ingredient pineapple waste, was successfully developed for the first time in Kerala, with economic benefits, as part of the M.V.Sc research work of Dr. Raseel. K in 2018.
4) Under the guidance of Dr. Biju Chacko, grass based complete feeds for lactating dairy cows, with the optimum level of NDF viz., 35 per cent, containing the unconventional protein rich feed ingredient coffee husk, was successfully developed for the first time in Kerala, with economic benefits, as part of the M.V.Sc research work of Dr. Rasanath. K in 2020.
5) Under the guidance of Dr. Biju Chacko, the technology to extract soy milk from raw soyabeans was first developed in Kerala and it was proved that soy milk can be successfully incorporated up to 50 per cent as a milk replacer for calves, with economic benefits, as part of the M.V.Sc research work of Dr. Fahmida. V, in 2018.
6) Dr. Biju Chacko, established for the first time, the data bank on nutrient profile of 50 different Ayurvedic medicinal herbs, native of Wayanad District in the Department of Animal Nutrition, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookode, as Principal Investigator of the State Plan project, “Identification and assessment of nutritive value of herbal products for feeding of livestock”.
