Department Profile

During the formative years of the Kerala Veterinary College and Research Institute in 1955-1958, there existed a composite department comprising of Parasitology, Pathology and Bacteriology. Later the department of Medicine and Parasitology came into existence in 1959 with Dr. C.T.Peter as the Professor and Head. The department of Parasitology started functioning as an independent department from 1974 onwards with Dr. R. Kalyanasundaram as the Professor and Head. Post graduate programme leading to the award of M.Sc (changed to M.V.Sc in 1974) and Ph. D were initiated in 1964 and PG diploma programmes in 1965.  
Till date, four dissertations, 46 M.Sc/M.V.Sc theses and 11 Ph.D theses have been submitted. Thirteen new species of parasite have been recorded, 16 parasites have been recorded for the first time from animals, 12 parasites have been recorded as new host species and life cycles of five parasite have been newly elucidated.
The department makes it clear to impart sufficient knowledge and experience to students and equip them as better veterinary surgeons. It upholds to investigate disease outbreaks and identify parasites that may pose harmful to livestock production and national economy. It implies on conveying and educating the public on the perils of drug abuse and on efficient management of parasites.
