Department Profile

The Department commenced as the composite Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in 1956 in the Veterinary College. In 1971 this composite department was bifurcated into Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Department of Therapeutics (Clinical Medicine). Ever since its inception the department is active in teaching, research and extension activities. Post graduation programme (MVSc) was started in 1967 and PhD in 1993.

Thesis profile
The thesis submitted as part of the PG and PhD programme under the Department amounts to 50 nos and covers areas like Toxicology, ethnopharmacology, aneasthetics and their reversing agents.

Research on Toxicology includes effects of insecticides, OP compounds and dicofol in birds and mammals; effect of different drugs in cobra venom intoxication; study on effect of fluorine, mercury, cadmium, DDT and endosulfan in cattle of Eloor industrial area and toxicity of Mimosa invisa in rabbits with identification of toxic fractions.
