The composite Department of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology started functioning as a constituent unit of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy ever since its inception in 1955. Later, in 1958 separate departments of Physiology & Biochemistry and department of Pharmacology were formed. In 2000, the composite department was again bifurcated as Department of Veterinary Physiology and Department of Veterinary Biochemistry.
Post graduate (MSc & MVSc) and doctoral (PhD) programmes were started in 1964.Till date a total of 33 MVSc projects and10 Ph.D projects were completed in the department. Currently there are three MVSc projects in the ongoing status.
The department has done pioneering research work on the Physiology of Asian elephants and different aspects of Avian physiology. Besides, elaborate studies on stress, antistress agents, immune responses, Reproductive physiology, climatic effects and growth were conducted in both domestic animals and birds.
